Trouble getting into 4th and 5th gear

Hi All help please.

I was at Blackpool at the weekend but when I left I had problems getting into 4th gear.

I'm having to be really rough with the gearstick! If I do manage to get it over and into what I believe is 4th gear, it sometimes revs like ive put it into 2nd, but this doesnt happen all the time. 5th is easier to get into but still have to be rough with the gearstick to get it over to the far right.

Has anyone any clues.......i'm thinking linkage? How expensive is this to fix?

Ann

linkage first port of call, to check to see wether it's linkage you should disconnect the linkage at the cup and ball on the gearbox, by removing the two m8 bolts holding the rear bush plate to the gearbox (note which side of boss it is fitted) and see if the gears select easily at the box, 4th/5th plane is with the ball pulled out of the box towards the wheel as far as it will go, and backwards is 4th, forwards is fifth; the 2nd 3rd plane is about 7mm into the gearbox to where the natural detent is against the spring and the 1st and reverse plane is fully into the gearbox against the spring pressure.
If all this checks out as easy then it's linkage; if not then the 4th/5th synchrohub is broken/cracked/breaking up or selector fork bearings have broken; dropping the oil and seeing the drain plug will usually confirm the level of wear overall; the synchrohub failure is a common fault, especially on pre sept 1989 built buses; VW redesigned the hub but even they fail, really needed to be made thicker but that can't be done without lengthening the shaft and the box and modifying the gearbox mount and the linkage and...etc.......

I'm snowed under at the moment, you'd have to bring it to the lock up at a mutually convenient time, that's near Delamere
