Header Tank 'Dalek'

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure I've read somewhere that when testing the header tank cap I should be able to 'suck' through the dalek nozzle but not 'blow'. Is this right? And if correct and I can blow how would that affect the system? Got a 1.6DG engine.
Thanks

On a 1.9 DG and the other WBX engines the header tank 'Dalek' cap holds the increasing pressure up to a pre-ordaned point at which it allows the hot coolant to flow into the top-up tank behind the no. plate until the pressure is below it's opening point. As the pressure drops as the coolant cools down it is sucked back through the hose thus 'topping up' the main header tank.

Yes, but you can't blow round the fat end to a pressure sufficient to open the valve. How else would the top-up tank work ?

stick the pipe bit in your gob.you should be able to blow through it.if you can suck air through it.then its knacked.(oh yeh remove it from the tank first)

Did that and I can do both - and yes I did disconnect it first
so as I thought in the first place, it's knackered. Thanks for that detailed technical description of 'blowing the dalek'......
