PANIC!!!

Im going to cornwall on thursday and i cannot get the van to idle,

1989 DG running early cooling system in 1985 panel

The carb was running far to fast and rich so i changed it for the old carb from my previous engine (which ran fine) but now it won't idle.
It runs ok when first started for a minute or so, (though does have slight whistling noise, ive sealed the carb to inlent manifold) then just dies, when i try and start it again it will fire for a few seconds and then die.

Ive not got the choke or bypass air soleniod connected.

Anybody got any thoughts?

If the bypass cutoff valve aint connected it wont idle--but it wll start & run at high revs--

Do you know what wire or where it connects to as the haynes diagram doesn't show.

the petrol cut of solenoid, if thats what you mean needs a live when the ignition is on, so one of the black wires from the coil will do, and that also connects to the choke..........

ok, i now have the carb all wired up, but am still having the same problem. It starts and runs from cold for a minute or so, then stuggles for a bit, (reving then almost stalling then reving) before dying. Then when i start it again it runs for 2-3 seconds then stops. The only way i can keep it going is to pump the accelerator.
Could it be the choke vavle gap?

ive taken the inlet off the top of the carb and the choke vavle gap is about 5mm, haynes say 3mm. The bimetal choke seems to be holding it open and theres not enough adjustment in it to close the vavle to the 3mm required.

you sure you are gerrin enough fuel?

checked the petrol filter?

btw, there should only be one, by the tank.......

I had the same problem with mine when I first got it. I replaced the inlet manifold gaskets (between the carb and the inlet mainfold and between the inlet manifold and the heads) and its been fine since.

Right after much playing, The choke valve gap is 3mm when cold, the van idles fine at this, but as the engine starts to warm up the valve opens and the engine dies.

I'm going to change the fuel filter, (but it looks clean), and the inlet to head gaskets, does anyone have any other ideas what could be to blame?
