Hi, i have a devon moonraker 2ltr air cooled. passed its MOT today, mechanic advised me that the push rod seals needed replacing he said engine would have to come out to do this. Im looking to do this myself can it be done with the engine in place. Had our type 25 scince April so just getting used to the mechanical side of a air cooled engine
Thanks very much, advise is appreciated. Devon 81

Bit of bad advice there mate. Can be done with engine in place.

This can be done with the engine, quite easily I hope as I'll be doing mine sometime over the next few weeks. My bookmarks with instructions are on the other PC but if you do a quick search here you'll find it. I intend to remove the wheel to get to the rocker cover rather than do the whole thing from underneath.
You'll need the seals and rocker cover gaskets either from Justkampers or Brickwerks, and I might buy a couple of pushrod tubes just incase I break them getting them out

Cheers thanks for the response, i will also get some spare tubes know you have mentioned that they can break when taking them out, as it will be the 1st time a have done anything a bit more complicated on the engine apart from servicing it and changing the plugs, leads, and dizzy cap etc.
many thanks

Just to clarify. With Aircooled 2ltr, seals & pushrod tubes can be done without stripping engine, 1.9DG - ie watercooled versions, engine out or telescopic tubes only. So much for advances...

best bit of advice is to look at the way the wire retaining clip fits, take a photo even as it can be a mare to refit if you didnt take note!!

I have been told by a friend that it is best to replce the tubes as well as the seals, i have been loosing quite a bit of oil from this area and its falling straight on to the heat exchanger on the off side, so would anyone else recomend that i change the tubes as well,if so should i use standard tubes or go for the sprung loaded type.

I've just had mine done and unless the tubes are bent or badly corroded there's no need to replace them. Mine was also leaking loads of oil straight onto the heat exchangers. Now dry as a bone. Just replaced the seals not the tubes.
If the tubes do need replacing then standard ones are fine. No need for telescopic ones on 2ltr air cooled engines.

Newbie so might be completely off the mark, but I thought I read in one of the workshop manuals that you could change the tube by removing the cylinder head, and that you could remove cylinder head without removing the engine?

thats on a watercooled. On an Aircooled they pull straight out. As I said earlier.
On a watercooled, you can do it with engine in place but its a mad way to do it. Why work with your head cramped under there when its easy to remove engine and get to everything easily. Done it both ways and always take engine out now - less knuckle grazing and swearing then.

Cheers for that, like I said, newbie, dont even get my 1st T25 till monday, and know the seals have a minor (at present) leak so will need doing (want to do mine / )
So all advice like this greatly received. Dne plenty of engine replacements many many many years ago, but struggle to get anywhere to work near home, no drive, no garage.
Did change the clutch on a bedford cf on a campsite in scotland once, one spanner, mole grips, screwdriver and alot of swearing
