Front n/s wheel bearing

Hi all, first post! I hope i am not repeating old ground (can't find in a search?) but:

Been reading theses forums for a while, and finally bought my first T25 yesterday, it has done less then 50 miles in the last year/18 months. So, might not have been a good move attempting to drive it 300 miles home, bang! the n/s front wheel bearing went on the A1, it was in pieces when i removed the wheel. I had to coast 50-60 meters to a safe place, then drive it 5-10 meters into my drive once dropped of by the RAC. I am yet to strip it down, but am i likely to have wrecked the disk and/or stub axle?

If so, wheres the best place to look for a stub axle, google makes me think these could be tricky to find?

Many thanks for any advice.

The first of many posts i am sure!

no way of knowing till you strip it, but bearing is shelled so hopefully the stub will be ok
get good quality bearings, eg from brickwerks, the gsf chinese stuff has been known to last like only 30 miles, though some people say they are ok, personally for an extra £20 I'd not take the chance

Thanks for the advice, but been to GFS today! (before i read your reply)

Going to strip it down at the weekend and see if there is any damage - the bearing really did break into pieces?

Well, just done it! Outer bearing shell was completely welded to the axle, had to cut it off in the end - had to clean the shaft up a bit - but luckily no major damage, or nothing that a bit of emery paper didn't sort out.

Quick question if anybody knows. In all the books there appears to be a thrust washer between the outer bearing and nut, there wasn't when i removed it, and none of the complete bearing kits come with one - is it ok without it?

Thanks

VW chose to fit one as it creates some preload on the bearing from which to assess how much the nut needs to be wound up. I'd get another thrust washer as soon as. Its basically a flat washer with a key in it so it stays still and the bearing doesn't end up shifting the nut once in motion. Not a great explanation (just come in) but yes you do need one.

Silly question really, thought as there wasn't one on there to start with...?

Any ideas where to find one?, a quick google search, and i can only find Karman ones?
