Ok after we were stitched up on the last camper, we now have a westfalia T25, 1984, 1.6D.
Money and health could only afford what we got but at least the bodywork is better, but....The clutch is knacked and maybe a new engine is needed. This is where i need your help.
What do i do first? Money is tight and i obviously can't do everything at the same time so is it stick it in the garage and get clutch done or is there no point in doing that without searching for a new engine?

Unless the engine is leaking oil or belching smoke get the clutch done - the new clutch could be re-used on a 1.9TD or TDI conversion. If you wanted to do this conversion it's gonna be eye-wateringly over expensive.
spot on..

try and sort out where the leak is first - try and remedy the smoke by giving it a service - oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and even glowplugs too.
Then see how the black smoke is afterwards - also, a cheaper conversion route is the 1.9 non turbo. It will be a noticable improvement over the 1.6 and would be the cheapest option.

Unless the engine is leaking oil on to the clutch (which might be why the clutch is slipping) then you should be OK to change the clutch.
As Louey says, the 1.9NA is a cheaper route, but whatever happens you've got to find a garage that is prepared to take on the work, which is often the biggest challenge.

agree DH - if the oil is leaking where the engine and gearbox join then the engine will have to come out regardless for a new clutch and probably a new oil seal. If you are taking the engine out then you might as well replace it IMO
