Paint / primer / confused!

Well I've gone and really got confused about my paint choice for my van.
I'll be painting over some filler, some bare metal and some rubbed down original paint.
I'll use Rustoleum for the topcoat, BUT I'm at a loss as to what primer to use.
Option 1: 2K filler primer
Problem: Last resort as I really want to stay away from the dangers of 2K
Option 2: Etch primer
Problem: I've read that etch primer can react with body filler.
What other options do I have?

Hi,
At the risk of finding out from other later posts that I have done it all wrong, I painted all the surfaces you listed with Rustoleum direct (i.e. no primer) as it claims to be self priming...
On bits of fibreglass round the roof though I did use a primer (cheap Halfords plastic/fibreglass primer in a rattle can) sa the rustoleum didn't seem to "stick" so well.
Noticed that the rustoleum applied best to the filler and old paint, and worst to bare metal, although it seems to of stuck well, it took a couple of coats to even it out, if that makes any sense!
6 months on it all seems fine still.... (fingers crossed it stays that way).
Good luck with it!
Cheers,
Alex

So I suppose that gives another optiion:
Option 3 : 1 pack primer
Is 1 pack primer all that bad? Whats wrong with it?
All the motor factors around here are trying to convince me to go 2k with both primer and topcoat. They've never heard of isocyanates. One of em even said "2 pack paints are no more harmful than any paint you buy"

For just a few areas, just use a high build primer and sand to match level of surrounding paint. I too have painted on bare metal without any probs providing surface is keyed enough.

Personally I would use a high quality high build primer all over, buy it from a proper paint suppliers and you might be able to barter a discount.
Rattle can or roller is up to you but they have both have good coverage.
The minus on the rattle can is the masking required but by going to the proper supplier you can get a large roll of masking paper that speeds everything up and the minus in the rolling is smelly chemicals to clean up.
Good luck, the quality of the prep work makes all the difference.
This is mine with a cheap compressor after teaching myself to weld and spray

Looks like you did a nice job on that camper.
I have actually bought 5 litres of UPOL 2k primer, so I might try rollering it on rather than spraying.
I've ordered 5 litres of LH5G Medium Blue Rustoleum from Avenue Coatings. Nice people to deal with.
Some of my bare metal areas have been exposed for quite a few months, so I might Vactan them first before rollering the 2k primer.
