1y Temp Sender Query 1 pin? 4 pin? drawing pin?

Hello,
Before I get flamed...
I've been trawling the forum and wiki since 8 o'clock this morning trying to work out how to get my temp gauge to work.
I've shorted the red and yellow wire and that seems to be all in order, gauge rises to the top...
The LED flashes and then turns off so I'm working on the basis the fluid level sensor is working ok...
I've recently installed a 1y 1.9n/a out of a seat Ibiza, the square holed circlip retained temp sensor on the water inlet/outlet hose doofer on the block between 3&4 has got a 4 pin connector on it could I connect the red/yellow wire to one pin and ground to another pin... if so how would I determine which pins to use and in an ideal world what would be connected to the other 2 pins?
or can I get a replacement 2 pin sender that will fit in the same hole? in which case does anyone know the part number?
On the old 1.6 block I've slightly different pipe setup and there is a sender with a connector on it that looks like a drawing pin...
There was a post I read by a scottish bloke either on here or brickworks that talked about a "drawing pin" connector but I can't for the life of me find it again...
I'd rather keep the seat pipe work in situ on the new engine as some of the old 1.6 pipes were damaged and it'd keep life simple...
Also can someone let me know what the single spaded connector is on the front (towards the passenger seat direction) of the block is? I originally thought this was the temp gauge sender but can't work out what it's for - it's got a yellow wire going to it)
A previous owner had put the 1.6 1y in (you've got to wonder why and there is fair evidence of "have a go hero" electrical work - scotch blocks and pvc tape in all directions... not that I'm much better but I'm trying to work out what goes where...
Any more light cast on the job would be a great help!
