Catalytic converter?

Hi there,

I haven't been able to find anything about this so anyone who can help I would appreciate it...

How do I know if I need a cat on my exhaust system?

Is it down to the engine or the vehicle it's in?

I have a mk2 golf engine and the cat is causing trouble, I don't want to cut it out if I'll be in trouble at the next mot!

Thank you all :ok

Mark

In a T25???

Nope dont need it.. but you do need the Lambda probe to make it run properly if its a late engine... more info on engine please...

Only trouble cats give is blockage when collapsed.. so are you sure its the cat???

Hi and thanks for the reply.

The engine is a 1.8 8v gti digifant, code PB although exact year is unknown.

The problem is that the custom exhaust at present is falling to bits and I would like to get it sorted. If I could get rid of the cat it would make my life a lot easier!

There is no wiring running to the exhaust at present, sounds like there maybe should be?

Thanks,

Mark

PB... prob not lambda controlled... what injection system is it running??

If there is no lambda probe inthe zorst already then you dont need the cat.... (presume uk reg van pre Jan 93 )

PB 1990 January onwards has lambda, it's fitted to the manifold

Revisiting this, a bit later...

I've looked and I;ve definately a cat in there (from a subaru), the manifold looks like it might have once had some kind of probe in it but it's now just crumbling rust!

Aiden, were you saying that it's post 1990 if its PB, or did they make PB digifants pre-1990 also?

About to mot to get the van back on the road and I'm trying to sort out any issues first!

Any knowledge on these engines and need/not for a CAT is much appreiciated!

Thanks all, happy camping

PB built from 87, only post Jan 90 do they definately have lambda from factory but it was an upgrade available to all earlier vehicles too, so you may have it, depends on engine number and exactly which vehicle it came out of etc....

that's a heck of a long weekend you had there

I could do with a couple of those "long" weekends myself.

:rofl yeah, not sure how that happened!

Thanks again Aidan, the engine number is PB (3 or 0) 76 492, no idea what vehicle it came out of! I'll just have to put it in for the mot and see what they say, it got it's last one fine from last owner but you never know how friendly they are with the tester

Once it's mot'd I have to get it registered with its proper engine too, never ends!
