wheel nut torque's

Hi all
wheel nut torque settings why are they so high? have checked all the books and asked on here, all say approx 140 ft pounds.
done back wheels up to this and rounded nuts off when i tried to remove them!
copper slipped em before i put them on as well!! good quality six sided impact socket etc.
when we eventually got them off i was standing on the brake while my fatherinlaw had a big breaker bar on back wheel nuts, would never had done it on my own
fatherinlaw is a mechanic and has a LT car transporter he says the nuts on this are not that high.
just wondered if anyone knows why they are this high as i have set at 100ft pounds and keeping an eye on them.
also does this apply to alloys
cheers
