what do I put in her

I have a 1985 t25 camper high roof with a dead 1.6 diesel engine, I want to put a more efficient diesel engine into her that would give me more power and a better return on the fuel. any Ideas would be gratefully recieved as I have little or no experiance with machanics.

a 1.9 polo or golf engine might be worth looking into, i went for a 1996 polo one myself
