Stripped my replacement lump, still to strip my old lump but fairly sure that some of the tinware has pretty much had it. I'm getting rid of the heat exchangers and putting Turbo Thomas J tubes on.

This is the tinware as should be


The 2 sections underneath that bolt to the heat exchanger and crankcase (items 12 and 13), are they more for protecting the engine rather than cooling? Can I do without them or should I fabricate/ buy something to fit under here?

Same question re the exhaust heat shield, No 1 in the picture.

What does item 32 do? Seems to feed air round to the bottom of the cylinder head.
The items with most rot are the ones down front and back of heads, No's 15,16,17. Are these just as critical as the top tinware to aid the cooling process(top stuff is pretty good)?

32 picks up warm air to carburettor in cold weather , no1 is heat shield i have run them without without any problems the bottom covers protect the pushrod tubes from damage and help to cool the engine, but i have run a type 4 engine in beetle with porsche cooling without them

i would be interested to know this as well as i have just rebuilt my spare engine which as some tinware missing

Hi Gunslinger,
You dont need no.31 with your dells.
No.1 is indeed a heat shield which is often missing.
If you dont use no.32, you will need to seal the hole that it attaches to on no.17 and no.21
Nos,15, 16, and 17 are just as important as the top tinware, your engine will go bang very quickly if you don't use them.
If yours are beyond repair, used ones come up on volkszone classifieds.
The picture is reminding me of the many hours I spent trying to figure out how they all fitted together after I'd first stripped them!

Thanks for all your help. No's 31 and 32 are going then and I'll blank off. The rest I will have to repair or fabricate as best I can.
