2.0 a/c heat exchanger and cooling advice

In the next couple of weeks I'm going to be changing engines and ditching the current air heating system and need a few bits of advice please.
Whilst I have the tinware apart can I ditch this lot? The stat doesnt work so I'm assuming that the flaps are permanently open which is the same as them not being there at all ??
If I'm ditching the heat exchangers whats the best way to block off the air circulation? I presume I will get more air then to the parts of the engine that actually need it?

Dont ditch your flaps mate,

your engine will cook, leave the flaps and fans on but in a permenantly open position. i.e lever at the top. This directs circulating air through your oil cooler keeping the engine cool.
I've seen some leave the fan and pipework for the heating off and just block off the holes left.
My thermostat has just broke so i am looking for a new one. Machine7 do one for a 1600 that with a bit of fiddling i should be able to fit. I know this will open the flaps earlier because of the different temp range but it's got to be better than running on permentantly open.

This classic article might be of some use (the heater and insulation section. Links at bottom of page)

The biggest moan I hear from mechanics having Aircooled VWs brought into them, is that they have half the proper bits missing... specifically the cooling and heating systems, and if all the bits
are there, they very often have been thrown together, rather than er, 'assembled'.
And additionally sometimes say,
if only they were complete, they could service them so their engines were cool enough and occupants warm enough.

hi stu
leave the flaps in m8, as said previously they direct the airflow into the right places.
the "pooh" from the alternator you can completely do away with as it has no bearing on engine heat. (if you lose the fan effort off the alternator you will probably gain a little acceleration and mpg too)
your bottom pic is of course the main engine cooling system without which the poor thing will instantly die a hot death

2.0l AC "CU" Air box, balance pipe and servo pipe.
The rubber T-piece is a bit of a commodity if in good fettle.

Somebody has already tapped me up for the heat exchanger and the pipes are currently spoken for too but I'll let you know if anything happens. I have got heater pods too if anyones interested. RH one has never been fitted.
