1.9TD conversion problems!

Hi Folks,
I am new to this forum. I own a 1990, 1.6TD, type25 camper, the engine became a bit smokey and so I was advised to replace it with a 1.9TD, which we are just completing.I used the parts of the 1.6TD engine including the injector pump because I thought the pump from the 1.9 would not fit in the engine compartment. The engine sounds good, but is slower to get away from a standing start than th 1.6, and takes longer to get to fifth gear, hills are a problem as well , I have been told I should have used the injector pump for the 1.9td as the 1.6 cannot supply enough fuel for the 1.9, this creates more problems like getting the engine cover to close, not to mention getting it timed!
Can anyone help me with this, please,
Thanks,
Brendan.

Morning Brendan
I am just getting to the end of the very same conversion -

I kept the 1.9TD pump as it is designed to work with the engine. Timing wasn't a challenge as all I have done is change the timing belt, ensuring that everything was locked down; it may be a bit belt and braces, but I also put a tippex mark on each of the pulleys and the old belt, then after very carefully counting the number of teeth between the marks on the old belt, I then marked up the new belt to make sure that the pulleys were in exactly the same position. I did however, stay with the 1.6TD Turbo rather than re-indexing the 1.9 Turbo.
The 1.9TD pump does interfere with the engine cover however the following bits will sort that problem out for you:
For the Cover itself -

To adapt the accelerator arm on the pump -

When I bought my AAZ I also got one of the accelerator arms included, which I also got from a donor van that I bought so I have a spare arm which I would be willing to sell on if you are interested?
Other areas which you may wish to ensure that your mechanic has addressed for you
Re-profiled the Inlet Manifold
Extended the Turbo Support
Used a longer Turbo Oil Return which runs to the sump NOT the block
Skimmed the Exhaust Manifold before fitting it so prevent it blowing at the head
Re-marked the dipstick to prevent the engine being overfilled with oil
You may also wish to think about an oil cooler as the AAZ is renowned for running a fair bit hotter than the JX - it appears to be expensive but it is a damn sight cheaper that replacing a cooked engine!
I hope this helps.
Regards
H-G

HI folks,
I have put the pump from the 1.9 engine back on and what a change in power! Drives great , much more comfortable. I have fitted the kit from brickwerks for the engine lid which will now close, I have a little problem with the engine idle speed being very fast, about 1500, I am told this is due to a worn bushen on the pump throttle shaft and can be repaired, everything else seems good.
