Welcome to 80-90 and the more 'creative' aspects of these vans.
We really need picturesof what wires you've got before they can be IDed. What year vehicle is the 1.9 out of?
You'll need to fit the 1.6 flywheel AND spiggot bearing - it's what supports the input shaft, so you won't get far without it! They're under £5 most places anyway, so nothing to panic about.
If you don't know how to host pics, but can take some email them to
diamond.hell@googlemail.com and I'll post them up.

as DH says, piccies help, but also where do the wires come from. I reckon they are from the fuel pump - was it a late polo 1.9 that had extra wires a few months ago?

If the wires are distirbuted around the engine they may just be water temp and oil pressure senders - you should be able to swap these out for your old ones.
If more than one of them go to the big lumpy thing on what will be the 'up' side of the engine then they're to do with the injector pump and that's gonna be more hard work.
