At some point i'm going to replace the flexible clutch pipe next to the gearbox, as it looks pretty vintage. At the same time i'll also replace the pipe unions, but I don't understand how to do this. Are the unions not held to the metal pipe by a flare at the end? Does the flare somehow have to be removed and then recreated with a new union?

So is it not possible to replace just the unions, without replacing part of the pipe?

You can replace just the end fittings but you will need a flaring tool so that you can flare the freshly cut end after you have fitted a new fitting, it all depends on the amount of free pipe you have by the time you cut both ends of the pipe removed the fittings, which can corrode onto the pipe so extra pipe has to be cut you will be looking at a length of pipe that is quite a lot shorter than the original once the new end fittings are in place and the pipe flared. In most cases you will need a new length of Cuni or copper pipe to produce the same configuration as should be fitted. If you get a cheap flaring tool from Ebay and get the brickwerks pipe kit you will be able to replace the coper pipe from the slave cylinder to the flexi then if you can not undo the other end of the flexi hose and end up having to cut it off you will be able to repair that as well Brickwerks pipe only has a flare at one end for those that do not have a flaring tool so should you require an extra repair you will have enough pipe a straight connector to join one end of the pipe but will still require a flare in the other end.
