CY Engine and JX engine - differences?

I live in southern Spain with my VW Type 25 1989 Multivan 1.6 TD. Unfortunately the crankshaft timing belt pulley snapped off and it needs a new engine because crankshaft probably bent and engine has high mileage.
I think it has Passat CY engine (which was inserted early in its life), but the garage is looking for a JX. Will all the peripheral stuff (fuel pump etc ) from the CY all fit onto a JX? Anyone know what the differences are?
Help please - I've done clutch change etc etc but engine types is a new subject for me.

Dave friday - I'm miles away from you on the border with Portugal near Ayamonte. I guess this technically not a technical answer. thanks for looking.

yes bit of a long way away! google vw cy engine and look at the list of disscontinued vw engines, looks like you can use any of the listed engines[jx rb ra sb and so on].
are you sure that your engine cant be fixed[i re-built mine here in Spain, new head, etc].

No, I'm not sure it can't be fixed. Got no time - garage quote 600euros to remove and strip down - will need new crank shaft (I guess, if pulley snapped off). I don't know the likelihood of valve damage. Bl**dy garage so far only sourced 'complete' JX engine, head, block, timimg belt fitted, turbo etc all included for ~4000euros from VW. rather nice idea if i had the cash, but sounds completely unnecessary. Although i guess the turb will go eventually, and engine does burn a little oil.
So a bit stuck now. Considering buying van in UK and bringing down vege recon engine in it. However, I need to be sure that everything will fit onto it. CY and JX seem very similar - I can't find out the difference. Should i speak to VW?

Barry,
I've been thinking....and specifically about rebuilding myself. Got no workshop first prob - my house is not accessible by road. But conversation with others leads me to believe damage may not be so bad - I don't believe the garage anymore. So considering head removal at first to see what's happened. If I can get another car in the meantime, time pressure is off and can do a proper job. There were no loud bangs or knocks when pulley snapped off, just loss of power, so why not be optimistic?

Hi Dave, have a look at the crank pully/gear key, then the crank key,is the pully key broken/missing? then un-doo the camshaft bearing caps and lift the cam so that all the valves are closed, then see if you can turn the engine over[spanner on the crank].this should give you some idea of what the damage is.
good luck Barry.
