Hello,

As per a previous thread, I am currently having a few issues with a kangaroo problem, ie slowing down from 30 to 20 MPH and then begin accelerating again and there is a kangaroo effect as if its going to stall. By acclerating or changing gear it rides it out but is very annoying. Esp in heavy traffic.

I have looked at the clear pipe from fuel filter to pump and there are odd air bubbles coming from the filter direction. I cannot see or feel any irregularitied with the clear pipe, nor with the line from tank to filter.

I am thinking there may be an issue with the fuel filter.

I am currently in the lakes for a few days and have managed to get a diesel filter, how do I fit this.... Does it need to be full of diesel, or can I literally remove the old one and pop the new one in its place???

Do I need to bleed it?

its a 1988 1.6 TD JX

Any tips would be appreciated.

Am about to undertake this myself so have been reading up.

General consensus is to fill with fuel before and it will start quickly. Don't fill it with fuel and it will take few attempts (and probably isn't the best idea).

Need to find an easy way of getting the diesel into the filter now!

Just hope this sorts the problem, ie rogue filter or gunked up one.

am more confused now.....


A guy on site I am staying reckons no need to put disel into new filter, as there should be a self bleed on the pump.... ? Is he talking crap or will it start after a few attempts and be ok???

Also, I am thinking it may be sensible to replace the clear fuel line whilst I am at it, I have some already, Burgos do I get this over the pump connection as it looks very tightly on....


The filter end of the pipe, does that just push onto the filter pipe???

Its best to fill with diesel last one i did filled with diesel fiitted it started first time without even a splutter if you dont fill you will be turning you engine over for ages (need a good battary) There in no primer pump but the injection pump will draw it trough as you turn the engine.

I suppose if you want to be crude then immerse your filter in a Clean container full of diesel, if not then slowly with funnel ,jug, whatever, as others have said it will start without but why crank your starter etc etc,
Dont go changing your fuel line just cos of bubbles, check the ends are spannered up right, so your not drawing air.

Thanks for the advice. Back from the lakes now!

I have fitted the new filter, and it has helped a little with the situation, but still getting this kangarooing grrrrr

I have noticed that there are still a few bubbles in the clear pipe - I am right in thinking there should be no air bubbles at all??? they are definately travelling from the filter towards the pump. Since new filter has been fitted the bubbles are a lot smaller and less frequent.

The only other thing I am not sure of is the throttle cable on top of the pump - how tight should this be?

I seem to have a little bit of slack, and am wondering if this can be why when taking foot of the accelerator and then pressing it again to accelerate there is a bit of 'give' in the cable.... long shot?

check all the fuel lines from the pump right back to the tank..its drawing air in somewhere and as mickey says ..make sure the conections are air tight too

"pooh" in the tank preventing the flow of fuel. Enough gets through to run but not enough to perform adeqately. Drop it clean it and see if that helps.

Is that a big or an easy job? I am new to the whole mechanical thing, don't want to tackle something and make things worse!(highly probable if you ask my other half about my DIY skills!)

it's easy. Follow instructions from member downloads. JUst remember to have something under tank when dropping. I used a bakers tray/basket from somerfield

If you start from under the van, check the fuel supply hose that is on the drivers side of the tank, this will be a short length of hose that wants to be in good order, its usually secured to the tank with a jubilee clip, about 4-6 inches long and the other end has a plastic fuel pipe stuffed into it and secured by another jubilee clip,

This then goes up to the fuel filter you just changed, probably a crimped or shrunk fit onto a banjo this wants checking to make sure its tight, dont go snapping it mind, on top of filter housing is a 10mm bolt/screw, check this is tight

The other side of the filter has same fitting, check this then follow to pump check fitting on this is tight.

Thats basicaly your fuel input path, that said I dont think that this will cause the kangarooing unless its really bad, sorry my xtal ball not too good tonight, hands on would tell straight away.

The pipe that goes on the passenger side of tank is the fuel return , I take it thats the way round yours is?

Hmm, have checked all of that already, it all seems to be in order, everything tight and not showing any perishing etc.

What else do you reckon could be causing the kangaroo effect? Any possibility of it being the throttle cable not tight enough? i have a bit of slack in it, but not sure how tight it should be....

The van really drives great, apart from the jerking/kangaroo when reducing speed and then accelerating again... doing my head in!!

A few of us have fitted non return valves on the fuel line between pump and filter, but it sounds like an air leak somewhere.

did you ever find the solution to this kangaroo effect?

we ahving this recently..
