My van has a (loud) squeak from the steering - when the wheel is straight ahead or left - no probs - but when there is pressure to the right sometimes there is a squeaking noise - any thoughts?

ahh - as Kev suggests that could be a brake squeak - mine does this from time to time and provided the brakes aren't binding I just turn up the stereo!

I get this occasionally, which may be because I don't have any anti-rattle shims and the calipers are a bit gungy.
Normally I just ignore it as it doesn't last long. Though it seems it knows exactly when to do it for the best impact - drove to a campsite the other day, no noise all the way there; the moment I pass the site barrier "WWWWWWHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!" all the way to the pitch. Lets just say everyone knew we'd arrived...

no shims needed and VW never fitted any, just brake grease on the back of the pads.

Fitting kit for early girling calipers with said shims
Also while you're at it brickwerks now stock the usually rotted away front brake stone guards.
Shame he didn't stock them when I had new discs and bearings earlier in the year

take the pads out and smear some brake grease on the back of the pads

Agree with Kev. If the shims are missing (and often are), brake grease will do the job. Filing leading edge of pads can also help - so I'm told.

Just picked up the posts (been away with the van) - stops when I dab the brakes - thanks for all the input.
