No oil drain plug washer on JX sump ??

Changed the oil today and couldn't see a washer on the drain plug - rooted around in the hot oil to no avail. Noticed that the plug has a taper on it and doesn't look like there should be a washer sitting on it. Am I missing one?

Hi there!

My JX was the same when I changed the oil....conical drain plug and no washer. If I remember correctly from reading the forum I think this is standard for the JX.... Main thing is that no oil is leaking out of it afterwards! Mine has not leaked (from there  ) since I changed it last year. Hope yours is ok too.

no washer , the taper does it all, so dont overtighen it up as you can crack the case!

out of interest ,as having problems with mine too, is the taper near the head of the bolt i.e. sealing on the outside face of the sump or on the end ie sealing inside the sump? i,m not sure i have the correct plug fitted hence the problem . minelooks nothing like the one for deisels shown on brickwerks...their is flat on the end and does have a washer shown.sorry to hijack your thread by the way but this could help me out too.

There are 2 styles of sump plug on T3 Diesels.

1. Your normal M14 plug, that uses a washer.
2. That annoying bolt thingy thats about 2" long, where you unscrew it and it's like undoing a valve, the oil exits through a hole about 1" inboard of the hexagon head.

The 1st one requires a sump plug washer.
The 2nd one doesnt.

Thanks for the reply. Mine sounds like neither of those. Mine is about 1 inch long but with a tapered nose + 6-7mm. & it has a hex head. This may explain why whatever is fitted doesn't really work. Do you know where I might get hold of the 2nd type? I'm not sure which one should be fitted mine is a 1990 model jx. I might get hold of an ordinary M14 plug and washer tommorow and see how that fits. I did notice looking into the sump that there appeared to be a larger thread size nearer the out side and what appeared to be a smaller threadsize inside the sump (not tapered but with a step)... but it was hard to see with dribbles of oil still around. I had a look on various car forums and there seems to be plenty of people with this problem using PTFE tape and silcon sealer with some success don't know if this is a good plan.

I think I have had a result. I bought a new plug and seal from GSF and also a Ford plug that was a bit longer from halfords. As expected the original was no good as the threads in that section are stuffed (ish) but with the Ford one it does find more threads further in the sump, so on with the new seal and longer plug and just hand tight plus a nip and it holds fast with no oil leak. The world is a happy place again 8) for anyones ref. mine was a 1990 1.6td jx engine and used the M14 plug with the washer. Thanks for the input :ok
