i have a noise coming from my engine which i can only describe as sounding like pinking this noise gets louder the higher the revs was wondering if any one could help with a diagnoses any help would be apprieciated

When under load, out of gear, going uphill?

What's your timing set at?

Hmmm... It could pe pinking but not likely as pinking is going to happen under load, not when out of gear.
Does it do it from cold and carry on through to when the engine is hot?

timing was set by a vw garage so i couldnt tellyou

seems to be more noticeable when it warms up

timing is to advanced the CU engine should be timed at 7-8 degrees after top dead centre
pinking is predetonation firing to early in the cycle.

most other VW engines are timed before top dead centre

get your garage to check again or you may do big harm to the engine.

have you changed ht leads recently?

Sounds like a follower. Mine occasionally does it ....I just turn the radio up

Being serious Im going to drop some 20/50 Morris oil in mine shortly...its running on Mineral 15/40.

What grade of oil is in it ?

May not help but check all your tinware is done up tight. Had to re-tighten mine recently... Sounded like a rusty old bag of spanners!
