T2 Gearbox

I was looking around here for a replacement gearbox I'm having some problems with my 4 speed on my 1.6 D. I can only find petrol boxes and I don't really want the extra ratio on the final drive. I see from some other posts you can fit a box from a petrol on with some changes...

My question is: can you take a box off a T2 which has a low ratio final drive (5.38) (much closer to the DM (5.43) which is presently fitted to mine than a standard petrol box) and with the same modifications fit it onto a T25...

I'm noticing some web references to the 091 gearbox being fitted to T2's and T25's...

I know its not normal to go backwards in fitting... but the T2 was a much more common van in Kenya than the T25 so if its possible it would allow me to broaden my search and roughly match final drive ratio.

Thanks in advance...

In theory you can go to an earlier T2 091 gearbox as long as it has the seperate bellhousing as it's the bellhousing and input shaft you are going to have to swap over.
There may be some differences with the gear linkage to deal with too.
I have a DM here if you have someone who wants 40kg of hand luggage

Although on the earlier T25s during its Aircooled period, the bellhousing was identical to that of the T2 with I think, only a flywheel and engine carrier change needed to fit say a type1 engine. I did exactly that with a crewcab in the mid 90s, an engine swap from a 2ltr Aircooled that worked really well. Obviously I had to modify the type1 substantially with bigger bores and a cam more suited to pulling power rather than speed but it eliminated the issue of more expensive spares (heat exchangers etc) and was surprisingly powerful.

Once the watercooled emerged, the bellhousing changed.

Thanks for your observations. I'm not in a massive hurry so I can widen my search. Do you think it would go in an overhead locker Aiden? Ha!

Thanks again...

probably won't fit in the new luggage guidlines, bit fat and heavy, like me
