mmm, wheel bearings into brake disc

So, spent today renewing front brake discs & wheel bearings.

Now when I went to put the outer rings of the bearings in first, they were proper tight - could only get one flush to the edge but not up to the point where it needed to be. Had to give up in the end, thought I might damage them. My plan is to take it to my mechanic to see if he can press them in, and finish the rest myself. But my question is, should it have been so difficult?

Also, the nearside stub axle seemed to have a bit sticking out the centre that twists round but that isn't on the offside stub axle. Any ideas?

What?! As in, for the speedo?! And by 'remnants' , do u mean it's bust or the end? If u just mean the end, then I'm even more clueless than I thought and don't deserve the van.

'Tapped' it in with a rubber mallet using a circular motion. Got one flush and didn't attempt anymore.

Slight panic over  I somehow read that you had the stub axel off! in which case your speedo would be well and truly**********, That bit of wire is your speedo cable it goes through the hub and is secured in the square hole in the end of the dustcap and a small c clip hold it, dont worry if this isnt there we can sort it later.
back to your bearing, , I do them my own way but if you fit your new one using a hammer so its flush and have one of the old bearings then get the old outer and place it wrong way round onto your new one and take a hammer and like hammer it. when its home it will sort of 'ring' a metalic ring that you will spot and it will be home, dont bother with a rubber hammer for this.

secret is to use a ball pein hammer and tap tap tap , top btm left right sos it goes in square , once its flush I usually use a punch that Ive altered and punch them in till they ring, think about it the outers need to be tight

Put the disks in the oven and the bearings in the fridge/freezer

Wow, the oven and freezer! Does that work - guess so or you wouldn't have suggested it. But damn, my puny arms could barely lift the disk anyway, and i certainly don't have aesbestos fingers. :D

May give it a whirl though. :ok

no need to put it on 200 degrees just warm the disks up and cool the bearings down, there still a tight fit but should only need a gently tap to get them in
