Right.. tonight I am removing the interior of the camper in preporation for the welder bloke to have a scan on sat morning. I'll take loads of pics before, during and after to post up... 1) so that I have some hope of getting things back in the right order/place and 2)in the hope it helps someone else.
If the panel work is a go and all turns out well I'm not sure I'll be overly keen to put the old fridge back in if this is the damage it causes... do you think this is overkill and that the repair should outlast the camper or is there a better fridge option to replace my 3 way one with?

UPDATE!!!

I have removed fridge and started with units...

The rust behind fridge is as follows

Rust outside is quite bad around the vent area

Now... I've hit a hurdle... How the hell do I remove the units?!! I've been unscrewing things left right and centre but still nothing moves?! This part in particular is causing me grief...

Hi Pete, Could the top be screwed down and then a formica type top glued on top if so your going to have fun, Sorry.
Other wise there must be more fixings somwhere.Hope this helps. Hobopatch.

Good idea... but that would mean knowing what it is I'm dismantling

Its a 1991 Trooper/Autosleeper pop top...

My main problem is I just cant see where the units are attached to the van.

I'll have to hunt around .... the fridge I took out is a right mess at the back... everything is rusted and crumbling.

Thinking I'll maybe start from the tailgate end tomorrow evening and see if I can get the cupboards out that way...

You know Pete, these vans are often put toghether in a certain way and order then over the years they get taken appart just like your doing and somewhere along the way its done a bit different and an extra screw is fitted here and there and so on, so over 20 + years its changed , may not have been sensible in the first place but??

I would start by looking whats holding the rear cuboard in, no doubt the overhead one will have to come out first then the rear upright then you may find the sneaky fastenings for the main unit, just when you think its ready for out you will spot another, and no doubt yet another , treat it as a challenge, cos it is,

as for your fridge, show us a picky of the rear, they do look scabby if theyve not been out for a service, dont meen theyre scrap though, the rust is more often caused by condensation running of the windows and down the inside of the panal, the horizontal x mem/stiffener holds it for a while and over the years a good bit of rot starts here then over time it passes through under round over and makes its way to the floor and so on.
Loads of info on here for dealing with it and prevention or at least slowing it down.

That interior dont look too messed around with, so being methodical you weill get it out ok.
That fridge is fine from what little ican see, I will try to get time later today and will post a picky or two of the important bits beneath, but a good clean and service and it should be fine, by the way was it working before you outed it

Yeah the fridge worked great before I pulled it... and I labelled and took pictures of all wires and where they came from... so fingers crossed I should be able to put it back.
I'm hoping the fella tomorrow morning can sort out the side panel.. as the vent hole is buggered, the window seal is pretty many and the sill needs doing.
But I think what you said before about working from the back is the way forward!

Wow!!! There ain't nothing simple or logical about removing them units...
Mike your suggestion of working back to front worked... got the wardrobe unit out (eventually) which lead to everything else... One major tip if anyone comes across this kind of unit install again..
THIS LONG UNIT....


IS FIXED TO THE VAN PANEL VIA TWO SCREWS.. THESE TWO SCREWS ARE HIDDEN UNDER THE RAIL (THIS IS WHERE THE BASKET HANGS FROM) ON THE INSIDE OF THE CUPBOARD).

So... onto the rust damage on the inside. I got a chipboard/ply floor.. is that normal yeah?

What do you reckon to the rust?
