Droning sound and starting problems! URGENT! stuck in France

Hello all, I am new to this forum and also to the T25 world. I have a 1.6TD that has been running fine for the first 2 months of owning it but as soon as I got to the pyrenees I began having problems starting. One truck driver diagnosed the problem as the air filter of which I replaced and has partly fixed the problem, however after left still over night it's still a bugger to start and needs to be pushed.
I also have noticed a droning sound that sounds like it's coming from the back of the van, this has got progressively more frequent over the last week. It stops for 10 seconds or so when I push on more gas and worse when slowing down with foot off gas unless braking is added.
It also has started making a sound for roundabouts and bends which sounds like a gargling sound!
I don't know what else to add of relevance but the van was put through its paces quite a lot those first months and I think I wore the clutch quite a bit in getting unstuck, there was much smell and the biting point has raised.
Any help i'd be enormously grateful for, or even temporary fixes, precautions to get me back to UK. I have about 300km left to do.

Regards,
Shane

hey sorry to hear of your problems.

is the engine overheating/boiling coolant etc...?
is there enough oil in it?
it could have a blocked fuel filter as well! that is causing the issue re starting

has it still got about the same power going up hills etc as before to rule out a problem with low compression in cyclinders?

the sound could be a wheel bearing in the back, feel both back hubs after use for one that is very hot or lift each side and check wheel for play.

I would have said air filter to!!

That rumbling gurgling may also be a cv joint

The droning could be a loose rear wheel bearing. These should be VERY tight and you may hear a scraping sound as you go round roundabouts. Any garage with a 46mm socket should be able to tighten this back up and replace the split pin for you.

Thank you all for your helpful replies, there was a number of causes to my symptoms, it turned out the droning sound was the wheel bearing that needed replacing and after having it changed twice it transpires the wheel hub was the main problem!
The difficulty starting was down to needing new glow plugs which is now sorted. So all should be resolved now after I find a replacement wheel hub!
