Hello All

I've taken the bottom engine cover and a couple of other bits of tinware off my T25 to gain better access to the bottom of the engine to resolve some oil leaks. I've sorted these problems out now, but I can't decide if I should put the tinware back on or not. Are the bits in the picture below important or can I just leave them off?

This is the big panel that covers the bottom of the engine bay.



This is the bit that fits between the bottom cover and the area near to the fan belt and bottom water resevoir.


This is the panel that covers the turbo. It seems to be shaped so that it scoops air and diverts it to flow over the turbo.

What have you all done? Have you got these covers on your vans?

Dont know exactly but doubt vw would bother to fit them if there not needed!

mr vw seems to think they should be there.who are we to argue.can you imagine the shi*e that might get sucked into the turbo without that cover.

Rob, my turbo is a sealed unit. Its not sucking in anything with or without this panel. This thing is just a bit sheet metal, its not part of the turbo.

So what have you got under your van?

its more likely to be a heat shield!

iirc the fan on my old 1.6td was exposed.i could be wrong.it was a few years ago.

The one that covers the turbo is a heat shield.
Really need to put it back on

Turbos get VERY hot! and so the surrounding body etc needs protecting.
Also...under body trays not only prevent crap getting up and under the engine but also are designed to minimize sound bounce off the road. It will sound noiseier if left off.
