Afternoon All

After Vanfest in September we are heading up to the Lakes for a weeks holiday and as it will be our first 'proper' trip out in the syncro (if we don't make the Devon weekend that is) I am looking for some mild off road fun to try out the new toy. I will have the mrs and the baby with me so not looking for any serious climbs, bogs, rivers etc etc, more just a bit of off road action away from it all with a stop off for a pic nic kind off thing. I have been on the lake district green lanes site but it all seems to be closed or permit only (Gatesgarth pass)

Any route suggestions? Maybe someone lives up there and would like to meet up for an afternoons drive?

Its our first trip up that way and want to use our syncro for what it was intended for.

Greg, I can tell you where there are a few nice wild camping sites in the North Lakes, also where there is a good green lane for an afternoons fun. PM me.

Never go off road on your own. Its the first rule you never break.

This is the Old Coach road, between Threlkeld and Matterdale End, near Keswick just off the A66.

Was nice and easy for one vehicle ( albeit a Rang Rover)
Dont know the legality of it now. as this was 8 years ago.


This is a lovely lane that is perfect for the syncro.

That looks just like what we are after.

Greg, the Old Coach Road is the very one that I was thinking of. It is still open, but limited to no more than four vehicles. It is in fairly good condition, I was last along it in the snow last December and we've not had too much rain recently so it should be just what you want. Check your PM.

Never go off roading on your own? Off roading on your own is great but you need to be experienced, equipped and know your limits.

I remember once not listening to such advice while doing some back country in Colorado and having to dig out my grounded Ford Explorer by hand from hard packed snow and ice.........didnt go out without a shovel again!

And once more on Fraser Island overheating the landrover on the beach coz I was driving around in permenant low gear....... all day.......would have been ok if it wasnt for the in coming tide. Wierd thing was I was on a trip with two Korean guys who were in the army, turns out they were in transport and often used 4x4's. Aparently its not in their culture to correct someone and identify their weekness?! Luckily we got it started as the water was lapping the wheels. Lost our 'saltwater' deposit though.

Life is a learning curve. Luckily I can laugh at myself now, Doh!

Unlike me at the time. I happened to know a couple of top blokes from Syncronutz (cheers Ian and Andy) who came to mine and Chiz rescue when stuck in the mud in a forestry near in the Dollar Glen late on a Sunday afternoon.
