the red wires should go from the alt to the starter solenoid where the big cable come from the battery to the starter solenoid.. if the alt isnt connected here its never going to charge.. if its connected and not charging then alt/brush pack/regulator is fubarred...
Disconnect the battery before waving a spanner around at the starter solenoid...

It actually pays to refer to the simpler type2 diagram most of the time as not that much has changed. I still use that one when working on T25s - principles are the same. Agree - the ones in Haynes or other VW manuals aren't that helpful....

i'll have to jack her up & check what i've connected where tomorrow afternoon,
the alternator i have has had a new brush pack! not bosch but i have a good spare bosch brush pack just incase! ya never know do ya!
so just to confirm tomanytoys my alternator wiring with the 2 red wires going into a ring connector should be connected to the post with the big black wire that runs down the drivers side of the van???????
there are 2 spade connectors does it matte which i have the red spade ended wire connected too? suc a small prob but when you dont understand the diagrams in the haynes or bentley ya feel lost
i previously bolloxed my ignition module as i thought the black wires that go to the coil were ground/negative! :O/ PRICEY MISTAKE !
covkid, pm where you ARE IN COV & a number, can i come & have a squiz at the t2 diagram or would ya do me a photocopy or is it on the net somwhere

Look on there buddy, Its the 71-ish bus wiring diagrams you want

I actually laminated a copy and its tucked in my Haynes manual. Bug diagram (alternator model) will also be the same. I'm over in Stoke, Chickenkoop in Willenhall by the way. You MUST have seen the blue tintop T25 bombing around - thats me

Ignore C1, imagine that as part of the alternator then it all makes sense? Only two wires for alternator (heavy red to B+ and thin blue to D+)

As he says, ,wish all wiring diagrams had little picky legends on them makess life much faster and easier, laminating the pertinent bits makes good sense , good idea that

Had a quick look at my engine . Now mine is a 1.6 diesel, but the principles must be the same. The big thick red wire comes from the alternator to the positive on the battery . The thin red and thin blue wires go from the alternator into the main wiring loom and disappear to the dash. The starter motor gets it's thick red power feed from the battery and not directly from the alternator. Hope that helps.

i have never seen a blue tintop in cov apart from once up the road from the "forum" is that you?
i can weld i can do a bit of spraying when i have too, i've got a basic grip of engines/box's quite proud i'vae actually completely stripped & re-conditioned a mini gearbox
but wiring to me is like maths! i have a complete mental block! i've put switches for various things in my cars i've owned & if i have to put a s

witch in something again i'll have to ask someone for a reminder, i know these things are simple but i have a right old mental block
i've put in my split charge setup in my bus, leisure battery, i can put a stereo in & speakers, amplifiers but it gives me serious brain ache LOL
i'll see if i can get this alternator wiring sorted tomorrow afternoon, then its off for a tune-up monday & i'll get her back on the road!!! i wanna bugger-off in it somewhere sunny!
no doubt i'll find more jobs to do on it yet! cant help myself sortin probs on my bus

Thats for definate, if you've got the gunson gadget, you're in the local 80/90 circuit. Rob has the timing light
Incidentally, was in B&Q today (one up near Morrisons) and amongst their pile of cheap "We need to get rid of all this stuff" was this table leg, bracket and screws - £5 - new in box
