Hi everyone

We'd like to take our van to the Lake Distict this summer and it's an area we've never visited before. We have a full seven days to tour and want to take our time, planning some stops along the way, with about three nights there, then leisurely back again. We're happy to wild camp for the odd night, especially in a beautiful location, but would like to mix and match this with site stopovers so we can shower etc! Recommendations for stop off's required as well as places in the Lake District too. ( Campsites not too rowdy please as we don't fancy late night drunken stag parties with music blaring waking us up!) Our first stop would be likely to be North of Bristol somewhere. Any ideas?

Hi I have just got back from the lake district.I stayed at the camping and caravan club site at windermere it is a big site very clean,nice toilet blocks and its own pub which sells food in the evening.It is about six miles out of windermere and three miles out of kendal.Hope this helps a bit.

There's a nice, basic site at Coniston Old Hall. No hook up, no marked pitches etc, but it does front onto the lake and is an easy walk into the village

There's a very nice wild camping place at the end of our lane, near Mungrisdale. If you are interested, PM me and if you decide to visit you can call in for a cuppa and some free eggs!

isnt it just called "the district" now, seeings there is no water there anymore?

I camped wild at the edge of Seathwaite Tarn and Angle Tarn (13 years ago or so, names may be spelled wrong), both were awesome. Seathwaite Tarn had several flat areas of grass right on the edge of the water, not too rocky in the soil either.

One other thing, if you fancy heading up through Wales, Henstent Park near Pen y bont Fawr is right by a beautiful river and nice and cheap. (I'm not sure what it's like for vans though, I camped)

Try Turner Hall Farm in the little-known Duddon Valley.

The site is literally in the middle of nowhere with hills and mountains all around it - a truly beautiful spot. It was quite busy when we went there in the late May Bank Holiday but many people prefer to have more facilities and nearby attrractions so might be put off.

If you want great walks on your doorstep, fantastic scenery, good showers and a pub 10 min walk away then it cannot be beaten. But you won't get electric hook up, onsite shop, entertainment, etc.

Its a site for real outdoors people.

I recommend you take a rain coat and wellies!

C&CC site in keswick is supposed to be nice. A few nice sites in Borrowdale which is near Keswick too. Also a nice site in Glenridding (gillside farm) which is excellently located for an ascent of Helvellyn or a boat ride on Ulswater. Get the boat to Howtown and walk back to Glenridding via the lakeshore path. Very nice afternoons stroll. Coniston Hall is good too and the Black Bull in Coniston serves about 6 different coniston ales. The Sun Inn up by the bridge over the river serves great ale too and has plenty of outdoor seating which is handy considering the Lakes is one of the driest places in the country this year.

national trust sites at langdale and wasdale are excellent too. Not really for the camping area for T25's but for the surroundings and views. Wasdale has the most stunning vista anywhere in the lakes as you are overlooked by some of the areas mountain giants. Wadale Head Inn also sells about 8 different home made ales. Ask Giles for a tour of his micro brewery
