Not a T3 question - VW Gti starting problem

OK I know that a few folks here run the odd Golf so it's worth a go in case this is a common fault?
Our kid's M reg Gti, Saturn V mileage and still goes like it should but...when starting, Cranks, catches and dies.
Chirrp, vroom, splut. Sometimes once, twice, 20 times, not for months, completely random.
Where to start?

Its trying to be quirky, like the van?
Its fed up with being dead reliable, and wants attention like the van?
When it grows up it wants to be a T25?
You've left it at home and gone out in the van too much?

Thanks Em! Good for a giggle...the car is my sister's and has the indignity of now being parked next to a cr@ppy 1985 Toyota HiAce camper. Ugh!
