is any one using one of the electronic power stering set ups that are now available, on a syncro, ony asking as sally will be driving the van more and one of her main complaints are the weight of the stering. just looking at the optians.

Talk to Richard RJES, he has it on one of his syncros, but he may be biased

Not sure of the cost of those but a decoupler & more standard wheels/tyres would make a big difference.

When whitstable a couple of months ago I tried one at vw sub in herne bay. Baz showed me the set up and the actual shaft, looked OK. I think I could do with one now, old age etc. Seems to be 3 suppliers to choose from!

If I were you neil and wanted to spend some money I personally wouldn't bother with the power steering. Why not spend it on something usefull and get that tight VC replaced and the steering will lighten up. The steering on my westy is really nice since I got mine done and your van will be running as it should be. You don't need power steering in mud or greenlanes because as you know it is easy to turn the wheel. Also remember the "oil incident" at SP last week and just keep in mind that might not be the last you see of that and these things have a habbit of hatching into something, if you catch my drift.

Do they have some sort of vehicle speed sensor with them to turn off/down assistance at speed? I drove a Corsa with electric steering a couple of years back and it felt horable on the motorway. Be interesting to see how well they'd work off road, in my opinion I've seen a few people get into trouble on PAS equipped vehicles I think a manual setup would have felt, though with expereance/familuarity its not a problem - perhaps the same is true of an electric setup but as they seem to offer less feedback than hydrolics you need to be more carefull still.

I'm also not convinced about the colasable parts of the steering column being done away with either.
As far as I know they are using Vauxhall Corsa columns.
Yes, they have a reluctor wheel on the CV joint and a ABS sensor reading it.
Several people doing them, several people have made their own.
Decent idea, just don't crash or you'll get polaxed by your column.

I have all the bits to do this conversion - cost about €150 including getting the electronics sorted to run off a rheostat so you can dial in the assistance. Its all off Corsas. All the autotest boys over here use them.

Are you planing to insall the parts that you hve sourced andrew, i would be intrested to know what you recon on it.
As glen and simon said is there some kind of speed sensor to deacitvte it.

I had that deactivated and it will run off the rheostat so you can dial in assistance from nothing to full assistance. Its for my project RHD van as the LHD Multivan has power steering. I have driven autotest cars with it and it is a really good answer to heavy steering but you have to have the electronics sorted or else it rubbish
