I have just bought a '93 Passat estate with a 1.9 Turbo Diesel in it. I have been told its an AAZ but which one. I know one thing - it goes like stink reaching 110 mph on the motorway with great pull all the way up there. This engine is for the Syncro cuz after Germany I got the message that 1600cc just aint enough!

This is it in the piccy

I cant see a number on the pump to identify it but its a Bosch and looks to be fairly new but there are a few things I cant identify on it.

What is the function of the things encircled in red. Starting at the bottom. Whats that? It isnt connected to anything.

Next up, in the middle, there is a connector plug thing with the black wire coming out of it that seems to be operating something from the top of the pump. What does that do?

Finally the plastic tube coming out of the pump under the bellows housing - whats that for?

Also the turbo has a whole pile of gubbins that I have never come across before

Whats all that about?

Can I fit a rover boost pin to this pump?

Andrew, the thing on the side of the pump is the cold start and should be electrically connected. The other circled bit is the kickdown switch, normally take these off and throw away. You should be able to add the rover pin if the pump top has a thread in the middle of it to adjust if required. The turbo pipework incorporates the exhaust gas recirculation, again just take off and fit the JX arrangement. Plastic pipe looks like the breather.

The pump should have a number starting 0 460 494 *** on the side, and I have listings of what that pump was fitted to if you can get the other numbers.

Thanks Dave. I cant see a number anywhere on the pump. I believe it should be on the upper side and visible in the photo. Ill take off all that crap and see if I come up with a number.

OK Crap off and no boost pin. Is this a clue to the type?

Hi Syncropaddy
That pump looks pretty similar to mine, which I have been told is an 'eco' pump that you can't fit a boost pin to. Mine also had all the extra pipework gubbins, which I was led to believe was EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-someing - distribution?). We just binned it all during the conversion to be honest. I'm sure someone more knowledgable(!) may be able to give you some/better more info!

I was thinking of swapping pump on mine to another to do the boost pin mod, but as it's now running quite hot my attention has been turned to reactive maintenance!

By the way, my Toledo also went like stink - it was awesome fun driving it home! For obvious reasons, don't expect quite the same effect in the van

See, some one with more knowledge (well done Dave) got there even before me: Exhaust Gas recirculation
I should learn to read as well as look at the pictures!!
