Hello

Since it's been warm my van has been running a little hot and I have relaised that the fan is not coming on at all. Given the other problems I have discovered and fixed since I got the van from Germany two years ago I decided to check to see if the fan was actually there... it is, so onwards.

It's a 1989 1.6TD Joker.

I have seen the wiring plans and diagrams but need some rather simple advice.....

It's a two stage fan, has a three pin switch on the radiator. The fan will run if I wire it direct to a battery.

Problem is I don't know what to do next.... Basically, the fan does not function when the temperature rises. I have tried to bridge the connection in the plug to force the fan to run, but I only get clicking of the relay. As an interim fix I have fitted a switch to turn the fan on, but would like it to work as it should.

Question is, is there any electrics involved in the engine bay that I need to know about or is it all controlled at the front...?

Any advice would be great.....

The clicking relay would suggest an earth fault.
Have a look at the connector block at the fan

I would be getting a new thermoswitch too

I fear removing the switch may have it's problems though.... but if I need to I will.

nearly all fan electrics are up front.(see below)

relay is above the earth crowns behind the fuse box

there is a large fuse like the glowplug one there.

check its ok and maybe check the relay as damp can cause it to fail!

first fuse in the board from the passenger door should also be the fan fuse

onlt thing not at front is an extra 12v supply wire running inside the main loom under the vehicle.

this runs from the black box in the engine bay(main wiring connectors on bulkhead) to the rad fan loom under the dash

The relay is likely to have been wet after the radio arial hole leaked...

I have the same problem with the radiator fan, and I was getting the flashing red light when going up mountains (here in Catalunya). How do I find the fault, was going to fit a switch to the two large blades of the 12v 70A Relay socket (above the fuse box). But would love to know if the relay is at fault or the radiator fan automatic switch. Also would I need a fuse in-line when attaching the fan to a switch?
