Hi all, i have just put a new starter motor on to my 2.0 cu Aircooled. When i looked at the dash lights i notised that the red oil light was on even without any keys in the barrel! the light does go out when it fires up as normal but 2 seconds after i turn it of and remove the keys the light is back on but dimmer than normal?

Thanks
brian.

Doesn't the oil light flash on and off when the oil pressure falls below a cetain level?1 If that is the case you might be looking at some kind of short circuit - crushed cable or siimilar. I guess his is the only real posibility of a relationship between the starter motor replacement and the oil light. Not the kind of thing you can ignore though as if it is low oil pressure you will bugger your engine. Stomps me but we probably have a T (Tefal man) 25er on here who knows...

Hello,

I don't know how changing a starter could mess about with this, but I know that dirty terminals on the connector the PCB behind your clocks can produce very strange results, and equally the earth connection next to the fuse box is worth cleaning up. I haven't got an Aircooled specific haynes manual, but I strongly suspect the oil pressure switch is powered from the 15 track, which is when the ignition is on. Some things (like the dash lights) are powered from the 30 track, which is directly from the battery.

You can give yourself a sanity check if you like by disconnecting the oil pressure connectors from the engine block - there are two probably - and earthing them to see if it causes the oil light to flash.

I'd still go for the dirty terminals under the dash clocks though.

Good luck

Hello,

dirty PCB connections are always candidates for strange electrical behaviour in my experience, but AngeloEvs on your post points out that there is a difference between the diesel and petrol oil pressure warning wiring.... I'd check this first as it's a good point. In the case of this thread the fact that the lights is on without the keys in suggests one of the battery powered lines into the connector may be leaking to earth somehow through the oil light - I think power only comes through the light switch when the key is not in the ignition. I don't have my wiring diagrams with me so can't be sure just at the moment.

Well after plenty of head scratching i finaly got it sorted. I started with checking all the earth wires including the crowns behind the fusebox the i checked all was well behind the clocks. Then i went and got a new battery as mine was quite dead but i still had the oil light on gggrrrrr I then thort about the altinator as i had a spair im my shed i tryed it out and bingo problem solved :ok
