Engine Overhaul in the Canaries.

Hello all,
This is my first post but have been following the forum for months and know there are some very knowledgeable and helpful people out there.I have a 1983 1.9DG water cooled van which was going great until a couple of head studs went with the inevitable consequences.I have the engine out now and stripped as far as the crankshaft and am putting a list of parts together, and because I am based in Lanzarote, where the postal system is unreliable at best,I intend travelling to the UK to pick up whatever parts I need.
I just noticed today that the gearbox input shaft has quite a lot of play in it.My question is how much play,if any,is normal. Also,is replacing this bearing much of a job.I want to make sure that I dont arrive back here without something that will allow me get the van back on the road.
Thanks very much for any help in advance.
