Hi all,

Just wanting to pick some brains about smoke from my dash so that I have a heads up when I look at it this weekend.

Basically fitted a new steering wheel from a mk1 golf last week and only used the van very briefly to move it back up drive.

Then when I went to move it again yesterday I got smoke coming from behind the dash on the side with the fusebox (being the drivers side on my LHD) - could the new steering wheel have caused this or is it just unlucky?

disconnect the battery quick.......Then check out your wiring ...your steering wheel could be the 1st culprit

Disconnect battery - terminal straight away, swap it back to the original wheel, re-connect the battery - and carefully see what happens.

The golf wheel needs a spacer, does the horn and indicator cancel work ?

Hi Guys, Thanks for the reply!

I managed to space out the golf wheel so indicators cancel and horn works etc so no problems there.

I will slide a credit card between the wheel and the contact then get the fuse box out and have a look around!

Hi Ben,

That's what I was looking for. However I feel it could rule out the wheel as the pin to stop the indicators is plastic on the Golf wheel.

I guess time will tell, I will update you all with the results.

Well guys I had a look last night and it wasn't the golf wheel - I guess this means that golf wheel is safe to use.

However there was some evidence of overheating on one of the red live wires that seems to head over to the split charge relay on the other side of the dash.

However having looked over everything and risked turning on again everything was fine

Im gonna need some more time investigating before I can decide whats wrong?

Well the issue has been tracked down to the secondary battery slightly touching the cover above it. This could have been much worse but luckily all is well!
