Exhaust - Hot air intake

Hi chaps and chapesses,
Newbie owner, just bought a loverly 1985 1.9 water cooled pickup.
I have a few "issues" which I need to work through before I put "Bob" to work moving house and emptying gardens and garages!
Issue 1 - The exhaust!
Currently the old girl sounds like a V8.. VERY noisy. not only that its popping and banging on "over run". Sounds great, especially changing down the gears, but I'm pretty sure it isn;t helping either performance, econonmy, or the engines overall health!
Looking at the exhaust, I noticed quickly that there is a dirty great hole in it! This is where there "should" be a pipe linking the exhaust to the air intake.
So, until I have the confidence in the engine that I am willing to by an uprated exhaust (most of which appear to be without this factory fit hole!) I would like to know what the rest of you do! I had planned on getting some "flexible metal hose" from my local motorfactor, and reconnecting the hot air feed....
But 1) will that quiten the beast, stop the poppping and banging, and make it run better, 2) is there an alternative whcih will solve the problem with benifits I haven't thought of (I'm thinking of balnking the holes off at both ends ofthe connection??)
Thanks in advance
Adam.
