Hi Folks,

I have recently noticed that the oil breather pipe is always dripping for a few minutes after driving, leaving a nice small patch of oil everywhere i park.

The oil level is just below max.Oh, it's a 2.0l 1982 petrol

Is this normal or could there be an underlying problem?

Usually if an engine needs to have an external breather pipe to help along tends to mean it is past its best. You will be able to extend its life for a bit longer by fitting a breather catch tank in the engine compartment ( to catch all the oily deposits that are dripping onto the places that you park ).

Catch Tank can be made from any 2litre plastic milk carton with a hole drilled in it for the breather pipe to fit in,,,,don't forget to allow the tank to breathe by making a number of small holes in the upper part of the tank,,,,,the deposits will collect in the bottom and will need to be emptied /checked every week.

i thought that the oil breather pipe was a standard fitting on the air cooled engines. I take it that it isn't?

basically, there's a small 4mm pipe coming from the engine which looks like it doesn't go anywhere and seems to drip oil once the engine has been run. I have just got the haynes manual and will look through it to see if i can suss it out. But if you have any further advise it would be gratefully appreciated.
