anti freeze level

checked the level of antifreeze the other day and i was below the minimum level by about 1-2 cm, then drove for a few miles to the garage but when i then double checked it was about 1 - 2 cm over the min level ? should i top it up to the min level with the van cold or warm? what is the right antifreeze to use i think there is a specific one for our vans isnt there ?

First off. Which engine do you have?
Waterboxers are a bit fussy, and like the VW stuff, while diesle engins tolerate anything.
The important bit is the expansion tank, tucked in the engine compartment. The topup tank behind the numberplate flap is just that a top up tank.
As the engine warms up the cooling system pressurises, then forces excess water in to the topup tank. on cooling the water is sucked back, along with any needed to replace small leaks.
With the engine cold.
Make sure the tank in the engine bay is brim full. add antifreeze mix as required. tighten the darlek top.
Add antifreeze mix to the topup tank, so the level is between the max and min marks.

ok thanks should have said its 1.9dg engine
should i just go to a vw dealer and buy some antifreeze?? there is one near my work

Not unless you know that the anti-freeze that's already in there is the vw stuff. What colour is it?
Check the level in the top-up tank when the engine is cold. Keep it topped-up to near the max line (just below the filler cap).
