600km per tank on a syncro on supermarket diesel. I can drive from South London to Glasgow without filling up

Is that all? The 1.6TD does that sort of mileage. I thought the newer engines were more economical?

TDI's are more economical but cost lots more to fit. An AAZ might do the same sort of mpg as a 1.6td but it has much more power.

Just tipping over 35 around town and 40 odd on motorway. Ours had its turbo removed.....didnt really get the AAZ for economy, was thinking more about reliability and ability to scoot 300 miles sarf at 70 on our jollies , then the same again from Calais.

Ouch. I only get about 27 mpg out of my AAZ syncro doka, and it's slower than our JX multivan.

Sounds like my AAZ needs breathing on... can't afford another trip to Huddersfield though!!

Big van, relativley small engine.
It's a syncro, which will add to the decrease in mpg.
It has larger that standard wheels/tyres that every time you set off the engine and transmission have to get rolling (and the brakes have to stop)
It's not a particularly nice instal with I seem to remember a cobbled together exhaust and the original tiny turbo.
(it was a while ago and I may be wrong)
Drive slower.
Fit smaller road tyres that you won't have to labour your engine (using more fuel) to get rolling.
Buy a decoupler (got to save a fair bit of fuel and use the van enough to warrant buying one)
Service the engine.
Set the pump timing.
Sort the exhaust.
Slow down a bit, it's a 20 year old van with a small engine, it never will be economical, but at least it's not a petrol!

ya know cruz your right knowing what i do now about the diesel swap i would have chose lpg, to Me it seemed happier with the old dg . . if only i didn't have to use the old girl as a daily runner (towing mainly) i would never have done it. but with very nr 40mpg now and running bio fuel the savings are immense and its a death do us part afire so will pay fore itself over the many years.
