Stumped - lost my idle

Not often I get stumped but I am on this. 1.9DG petrol, always run perfectly without missing a beat. Not an old engine either.

Suddenly won't idle, had carb off, renewed gasket to inlet manifold, all vacuum hoses sound. Loath to mess with mixture if its run fine up to now. Soon as choke comes off, dies (which shows it prefers a richer mixture - hence hunt for leaks) also dies at every junction or stop obviously, so makes it a chore to drive now. Slight misfiring on deceleration. No actual loss of power though.

Next port of call is a new set of plugs, leads, but any ideas?

Yes brake servo pipe is fine. Carb incl float bowl, jets, all cleaned out. Cone filter spotless. Electric cut off jet clicks ok

try new plugs and leads could have broke down and at low revs not as much volts through um, spray um with wd40 etc see it the leads are tracking externally better to do it when gets a bit dark as easier to see!

solenoid clicks fine when power applied. Will do leads an plugs, may just cure it as odd it should behave badly as its a reliable thing and fine when its off idle (apart from misfire/backfire on deceleration). Leads around 2 years old, plugs possibly a year so may be up for new ones now. Gives symptoms of an air leak but you can get sidetracked if you get fixated on cause...

I too would be looking for an air leak, with it being so sudden it does suggest a failure of something.

pull down unit OK?

Cov - that is exactly what mine did (running LPG). One day it was fine....the next, lumpy idle, stalling etc etc.
Did the usual service items....ran perfick! It was a very sudden degeneration.

Have a feeling thats what it is. Instinct says its air leak and that was my first line of investigation but found nowt. Not looked at inlet ports but quite honestly I'd be chasing my tail there without ruling out basics.

Rob, I'm coming round there with a big stick..... :D

Will be at Rons in the morning to sort out his possibly phantom buzzer of doom but will drop into yours on way back. Just don't start showing those ruddly slides of your holiday in Mablethorpe with your Gran all over again - I've seen them serveral times now
