Hitop Westy fittings puzzle

Hi all, I have a 1984 Westy Hitop, and when you pull out the top bed, I see that there are two fixtures let into the sides of the hitop, about 8 inces above the level of the bed. Brown plastic fittings with about a 20mm hole. Are these part of a fitting to prevent children falling from the top bunk, or for attaching a ladder, or what? Any thoughts greatly appreciated! But its nigh on impossible to find one available! (We have an 86 Joker), ended up settling on the Mothercare Wooden adjustable bed guard which doubles to hold all the bedding in up top when were driving.
