Is the engine number in the same position as on a 1.6D n/a, and does it have 1Y stamped on the block?
I have spoken to someone how said they don't remember seeing 1Y in the engine number,so how am is suposed to know it is one?

Is there any other way of identifying the engine?
I have found what I think is a good 1Y in a donor car and a friend is going to verify that it is for me as it''s quite a distance.
many thanks Rob.

have a look on the cam belt cover just above the cam, there is sometimes a sticker on there starting with 1y.other than that it is stamped on the block under number 3 injector ..but they are sometimes hard to make out.the sticker thing is your best bet if its on the top of the cover

Mine is actually cast into the block just under the manifolds. Oh bugger, actually I think it says 1.9D or TD will have to have another look if it says 1Y anywhere. Pointless comment really as I havn,t answered your question have I ? Will have a look tomorrow.

Cheers guys.......
I found one on ebay yesterday.....spoke to them today and they have said it's 72,000 from a 1994 golf £195 with £40 delivery.....
Will be delivered on Friday....
As I have no engine stand or hoist at the mo my worry now is how i'm going to get it from the lorry into the back of the van until I can remove the old and fit the new.
Thanks for your help and expect loads of stupid questions in the next week or two.
Here's the first one just to get you warmed up, is the timing belt & tensioner different form the 1.6 n/a and if so wheres the best place to ge one, can't see them listed pacifically on Brickwerks.
Rob....

Brickwerks sell it all Rob - just check that the cam belt tensioner is plastic or metal - you need the same one.

Try and get the reg plate of the golf its come out of - sometimes makes it easy when GSF ask you...
