Can't find coolant bleed valve in engine compartment

1600D CS (non-turbo) 1983

I've just put in a new radiator and end to end pipes. When filling didn't get as much water/coolant in (about 6 litres) as expected but hadn't removed any hoses in engine bay, but water was flowing out rad bleeder. Now the red led flashes and stays on when engine gets warmed up although needle staysjust left of led. Coolant tank and number plate tank are full to brim and water in both is warm. Rubber hoses in engine are hot but radiator is stone cold.
Van sat without the metal pipes for a month cos replacement pipes got delayed.

1. Could the thermostat be seized?
2. Could I have fitted the rubber hoses to rad the wrong way round? Service manual diagrams are a bit vague.
3. Does this model have a water pump bleed valve - couldn't find one?

Would be grateful for any advice from the worldly wise on the world wide web.

Did somebody say explosives and a lit match? Naw - I've thought of that one!

search the wiki, no bleed v/v on pump, you could have the hoses on the wrong way but I cant quite see them from where Im sat :rofl so cant comment, top up tank is just that a top up tank and should only be filled to the mark (about halfway) when running do you get water flowing out of rad bleeder? if so then keep it coming and keep eye on exp bottle as air will be pushing water out then air then hot water, like I said search the wiki loads of info there /\

I put this up for someone on the Syncro forum. My preference is the Brickyard method.

WIKI ON 80-90

and...

BRICKYARD VERSION

Thanks a lot for that Mike.
Ah! So you get water then air then hot water! There was water coming out the rad valve but will have a good go at getting more air out through the rad and bleed it for longer then see how it goes from there.
Many thanks
Neil

Thanks. Had seen the Wiki one, but not the Brickyard. Great! Will have a good read of that.

That Brickyard Version is excellent - very comprehensive. Most grateful for directions to that, SyncroSwede. I obviously haven't bled the system properly after having looked at that.

Did a Brickyard bleed, only managed to get another litre in. Red led still flashing. My coolant looks fizzy at the header tank which is a bit -correction- very worrying! I know the sender on the header detects low coolant to make the led flash. Is it the same sender that makes it flash for coolant overheating? (Engine temp needle, fan etc seem fine, needle just going past the led fan came on etc when I thrashed the engine for a good while when stationary)

When I replaced my metal pipes with plastic ones I did things as per Wiki but even so I had to keep giving it a good run for a few miles and topped it up. in the end just kept using it as normal and topping up every time until it settled down. Must have been air locks. Kept wondering where the stuff was going. Can't remember what the amount of coolant should be but would not risk a road blast if nowhere near the right amount.

Thanks. Think that's good advice. I reckon what revving it up whilst topping up has shown what I've been in denial about that the head is leaking. Since I put the new pipes and rad in and topped up that's when the led started flashing, coolant backing up into number plate tank, and after giving it a good rev (something I don't normally do) the green coolant has turned mucky grey and has that burnt oil smell. Suppose a lot of the muck could be coz the system has been properly circulating and pressurised at last, the pipes had holes all over and patched with no more nails or summat. Only had it less than a year. I'll empty it out again and refill with water. Don't hold out much hopes though. Not that I know much about these things but from what I've read looks like the head - at least hope its not the block! Not too chuffed after crawling about under there for days on end. What's the best way forward? Suggestions welcomed
