Well i just cant seem to get the bloody thing out!

Used an M6 rawl bolt with threaded bar,washers etc as per a post on here and the rawl bolt was too small to expand enough.

Used an M8 rawl bolt with threaded bar, washers etc and all ive done is bent the bar and ruined the rawl bolt, the bearing hasnt moved at all.

Anyone got some tips to get it out? The crank is out of the engine, can I put it all back together and then worry about getting the bearing out? I dont want to damage shims and washers etc trying to get it out when the engine is back together.

Well ive bought some kind of bearing puller and still havent had any luck, i dont know whether im being thick or what!

The tool ive got looks similar to the one shown in the bentley manual so i thought it was correct, can anyone let me know how to use this thing?

Thats an external bearing puller, what you have is an internal bearing...not the same thing! you need something like a sliding hammer with an attachment that hooks through and around the inside of the bearing then with repeated action of the sliding weight part of the tool, you pull the bearing out bit by bit.

Alternately you could make something with a bolt and socket. The trick is to design something that will go through the middle of the spigot bearing then hook on the back side enabling 'pull extraction' into the socket.

Yes, what he said.........but if the bearing is shot and only the outer casing remains you may have get it out of the hole by cutting it.

I have done this in the past with the aid of a very thin chisel.

Ive never totally understood how slide hammers work to be honest.

If say i bought a slide hammer i understand i would use an attachment on the end that goes through the bearing and can sit on the back of it. Would i then keep on giving sharp pulls on the weight towards the handle to get the bearing out?

Ive never used a slide hammer before im just suprised that using the weight on it by hand gives enough force to get it out, as in my first post i tried using a rawl bolt with threaded bar and a hammer which didnt make the bearing move one little bit.

The bearing hasnt fallen apart so i shouldnt need to use a chisel.

Im not totally sure about the socket using the diy method, why do you need a socket if you are pulling on the bearing? I thought about using a threaded bar with something on the end going through the bearing, then using a socket with a nut behind it. Then tighten the nut on the socket hoping the bearing will go into the socket, im not sure that will work though.

Maybe im best just buying a slide hammer!

Exactly, this is what you would do....

and as you say the bearing is still complete then it should be a 'piece of pisss' to get out.

To use the M6 rawlbolt slide hammer you tighten a nut/washer to pull the shells of the rawlbolt outwards (locking it into the bearing) and using a weight slide against a larger washer tap the bearing out.

The same principal with only slight mods ( i.e. M8) can be used to remove the after-market oil pumps which don't have the threaded hole to pull against.

Both have worked for others before you ....

I didnt use a weight with the rawlbolt i used a threaded bar with a washer on the end and hit the washer with a hammer, but whether i used a weight or not it wouldnt have worked for me. The M6 rawlbolt simply didnt expand enough to tighten onto bearing and just came through the middle when pressure was put on it.

When i tried it with the M8 it ended up falling apart before the bearing even budged.

Im not saying it cant be done like that, but I didnt have any luck doing it that way. Im all for going for the cheaper diy option but for me this job just wasnt having it!

The bearing came out with a few sharp pulls of the slide hammer many thanks, now onto the next task!
