I was wondering how the air feed works on my 1.9 petrol 1985 van. I was swapping the plugs and leads last night and I removed the air filter box and housing for better access. The "last" pipe (behind the driver's side rear lights) seemed to not have an air feed - but more of a hole at the end. It didn't make sense how air actually works it's way into the filter.

Should there be a pipe that drops below the engine and faces towards the front of the van, so when you're moving air is fed into the system?

Sorry if this sounds a bit vague, I should have taken some photos.

On a 1.9 DG styleee the combustion air is drawn through the air heater box through the filter into the carb. The air heater box and it's duct from no.1 cylinder exhaust downpipe is often missing as it gets messy and is unneccesary in our temperate maritime climate, often there's just a plastic duct leading to the air filter box. The air is drawn in from the intake on the upper offside rear of the van ... or just from the engine bay if the warm air gubbins is missing.
