beetle engine?

I'm looking to run a beetle engine in a lightwieght pick up that will only ever do short runs on show fields, the guy building it was intending to get it sorted for run to the sun but didn't finish it in time............He knows it won't have the go for a daily work horse but its purely for novelty value....
anyway the van previously had a ford rs00 engine in it which was a bit daft, this was basically tired after spending many years outside, the plan was to run a 1600 twin port purely because theres a recon one sat on the floor.
The old rs2000 engine has been removed as has the gearbox this has left us with a t25 gearbox with a waterboxer bell housing but a ford input shaft.
If I remove the bell housing and find a replacement water boxer input shaft am I right to say that the beetle engine would line up to the box then?
Initial plan was to use an Aircooled gearbox that I had but this has a different gear selector and a cable clutch, ideally would like to use t25 box with hydraulic clutch and existing gear linkage...........
Anyone done this before?
