GEARBOX PROBLEMS!!

Hello!
I'm having a bit of mechanical problems with my '85 watercooled on the gearbox (manual 4 speed). I've had it 3 years now but only recently it really does not like going into 2nd gear and keeps trying to 'kick out'. Its seems fine for the other gears though.
From speaking to some garages (some vw places, some general garages) i seem to get differing answers - its either the gear linkage or a new gearbox. Is this a general problem? Is it an easy fix? Who to believe? Also what sort of costs am i looking at?!!
