AAZ conversion turbo misery :(

I was nearing the completion of my aaz conversion, today I finished welding up the new stainless exhaust. Now I have had the van running previously and have noticed traces of oil near the turbo but today was the longest period I have ran the engine. It was running at tickover fine, I blipped the throttle a couple of times it seemed ok but it took a while for the revs to drop, unsure as to why I checked over the engine and noticed oil dripping from the turbo. I stopped the engine.
Upon removing the intake silicone tubes there was a decent amount of oil, it looks like the revs were not dropping as it was running on its own oil. I brought the engine without hearing it run, there was a small amount of play in the shaft but nothing too bad. The seller sold the engine via a large vw forum. The seller assured me the engine ran fine and did not smoke. Now that I have it running this is obviously not the case, it must have smoked. Im not sure what to do about the seller and where I stand but I believe he has sold a couple of aazs in the past.
Anyone care to suggest what to do to move forward? the way I see it I have a couple of options

-Buy a brand new turbo
-Get my turbo reconditioned
-buy a second hand turbo and take the risk

I definatly have not got the money to buy a new turbo at nearly £500. So its one of the other two options which would you choose and how much for a decent rebuild and where from?

The turbo is a KKK K14, I do have a K04 turbo are they interchangeable?
thanks
Adam

Hi , have you checked , quantity of oil in the engine , I've seen the AAZ's with over 9 litres of oil in , because of the wrong dipstick used , next to check is the oil return from the turbo - does it look as though its got a good return ,

Hi
Yes I filled the engine up from empty with 4.5L of oil, the dipstick is a CS one modified and once I put in the new oil I marked it at the correct level. The oil return is a stainless braded PTFE hose into a CS sump modified, with an ali adaptors similar to the one sold by brickwerks.
