Hi I've recently purchased a T25 2ltr watercool van, and its my first time on the forum. the old girl has 2 problems and I wonder if anybody can help?
When trying to start the vehicle its very laboured and slow but does fire, the battery has been changed along with the plugs and leads etc I'm not sure whether to try changing the starter motor of whether its something else.
Second problem:- When the vehicles is ticking over and being driven on fairly level ground it runs very smoothly but when attempting to drive up an incline or hill and the engine comes under load it starts to jump's like skippy the kangaroo if I back off on the accelerator and change down the gears it will climb the hill but in its on sweet time, any idea's of what might be the problem?

Hi
First off if its watercooled its either a 1.9 (1915cc) or 2.1 (2109cc)

Id guess its a 1.9 which has a carburetor on it.. in which case you are expecting 20 odd year old technology to drive like a "modern" car.. these have little ot no electronic aids to run the engine..
That said, if applying a little throttle causes it to "drop dead" then I'd be looking at ingnition timing and the vacuum advance unit, when the vac advance unit has a leak it will cause a similar symptom....

Hi thanks for the info it is a 1.9 engine the fault has developed since I had the unit I enjoy the leisurely drive, the engine doesn't drop dead but it feels like either to much or 2 little fuel is getting through.

With regards to the laboured starting, the first thing I would check is the cables to the starter motor. They often corrode and break down.

I've found the small fuel filter inside the inlet pipe for the carb this was full of rubbish, cleaned connections to stater now turning over properly but I couldn't get it started, Then changed the coil for a new one managed to get it started but its not running right, I'll try the vacuum advance unit next is there anything else I could try?http:

Starter motor: support bush in the bell housing broken or worn oval, corroded earth leads (one on the gearbox end) corroded feed to solenoid, corroded switch terminal on the solenoid.
Jerking under load: vacuum leak, vac advance unit broken, accelerator pump fault, a HT lead/distributor cap tracking, a spark plug breaking down, blocked fuel line, blocked air filter.
